The Demey Family • Belgium

This wonderful family of 2 adults and 3 children lost their christening candles when their house burnt down. They had this tradition of lighting them for birthdays or special occasions. They asked me to come up with a design in stone which could replace the candles and would still allow them to light a candle when celebrating a birthday. Five sections of the stone were waterjet out and a tealight was placed into each little block, showing the initials of the five familymembers on each block. The blocks slide in and out. The family chose a part of a poem to be carved above the five blocks, bringing the whole piece together. While I designed the concept and the letters, lettercarver Maud Bekaert carved all the lettering and was responsible for making this idea come to life.
